Our little "sweet"heart Aliza

This week has been life changing for us. Last weekend Katie and I put a few clues together and began to be concerned about Aliza's health. We had noticed a week prior that she had begun to lose a little weight. On Saturday Katie mentioned that Aliza had been thirsty the last week. The thirst was constant and it was tough for her to make it more than a few minutes without running to the bathroom. In the last couple of days she had begun to eat like never before.

On Monday morning Aliza was officially diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (Juvenile onset/Insulin dependent). Although she was always stable, the standard here is for all newly diagnosed patients to be hospitalized for several days, both to get her blood sugars in control and to teach the parents how to care for her. We headed to the hospital Monday afternoon where we met a wonderful team of physicians, nurses, and dieticians.

Although it was an expectedly rough transition, Aliza is a brave trooper and she has been getting used to all the new routines. We test her blood sugar with a finger poke before each meal and at bedtime, and she gets a small shot of insulin after each meal and at bedtime. We are so thankful for all the improvements in the understanding of diabetes that have come in the last few years. The types of insulin have improved as well. In contrast to the past, there are no restrictions on her activity or diet. In a few months, she may be eligible for one of the new insulin pumps as well. That would eliminate the need for the 4 shots a day (she would still need the finger pokes).

We are especially thankful for all the support we have felt this week. Katie's mom flew in at a moments notice and has been a loving support all week. The U of Rochester was great and quickly let me off for a week to be with the family. Our wonderful neighbors have jumped in and helped us in so many ways. We appreciate all the notes, emails, and calls and have felt the strength that comes from the prayers of so many. We truly are blessed.

Aliza and Grandma were deciding what to order for her room service (I must say that Aliza definitely enjoyed her room service!) while Rachel beat me in Battleship.

Plenty of art on the wall, stuffed animals, balloons, and company!

Highlights were craft time and the adjustable bed. Aliza decided that she preferred the bed at maximum height. She could see the TV better and was closer to all her visitors.

Aliza loves to give shots! She jumped at the chance to give a salt water shot to each of her 3 nurses, as well as her doctor, her dad, and her mom.
We are doing okay and managing the best we can. We are learning a lot and will soon post a link for any of you who would like to join us in raising money for juvenile diabetes. We thank you for all your love, concern and support of our family.

I have been thinking and praying for your sweet family all week. Aliza is so brave. It sounds like it's all sinking in now. Thanks for the update and post. We'd love to help any way we can. Aliza is blessed with wonderful parents and I'm sure Rachel and Hannah are the perfect helpers. Luv ya

It's great to hear a "good news" update. At least from the photos she does appear to be handling it quite well---I can only imagine how hard it is on the parents.

If any family can handle this, it is definitely yours! Poor Aliza with the finger pokes. :(
You are in my prayers!

I am so happy that they have been able to control and teach Aliza about her diabetes. She is so sweet. I'm sorry that you have been given this challenge but I know that you will do great. It's nice to have a husband and daddy that understands it all. Good luck with your family, medical school and life outside of Utah. Enjoy!

I think it is amazing how fast you caught the symptoms and got her diagnosed! You will be in our prayers--Aliza seems like a real trooper--what a sweetheart. Are you living in Rochester? That's not too far from us--we should plan a little reunion!
